Client security update check-in!

Recently, I've noticed an uptick in activity related to hacking and unauthorized attempted access of databases and accounts. I'm taking every measure I can to protect client websites, primarily using Wordfence for WordPress clients and RS Firewall for Joomla! clients. I receive weekly briefings on every client account and if I see anything suspicious or receive an alert of any kind, you'll be notified as soon as I know. If at any time you want to upgrade to a pro account for your site, you can check out details at http://www.wordfence.com and...

Moving Forward Re-brand

Moving Forward Re-brand

I recently had the job of creating a new logo for our former Arlington for Hillary campaign group. We choose to re-brand to a new name "Moving Forward Arlington" and so it was then my task for a new look and design. I also only had a few hours to come up with something as Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey was holding a town hall event the next day and our group was hosting it in Arlington for 350+ residents. The event was heavily advertised, streamed on Facebook Live and trended locally on Twitter so it was important to have a new brand and message to showcase during this time. I...

Current Web Design Trend

Ditch Stock Photography Ditch stock photos and take or use some of your own photography. People want to connect with your business when visiting online, so it should organically feel like your business. Photography is the easiest way of accomplishing this, and it doesn't always have to be professional. Some of my most successful websites have featured photos taken with an iPhone. The photo below of Crane Beach, is unedited, and was taken by myself with an iPhone 6. Also, it can save $$. Professional photography is great of course, but it can be expensive for a small business starting out....

Infographic for Social Media

Infographic for Social Media

The Arlington, Lexington, Belmont Democratic Regional Office needed an infographic designed which blends in a local image with Hillary Clinton's design scheme and also has just enough info for social media. They're having a grand opening in less than a week with Congresswoman Katherine Clark and it was important to get this out on the proper channels ASAP. Here's the final product, blasted out to over a thousand local followers on @ARL4Hillary's twitter account. It is an edited aerial image of Arlington, with a font (Sharp Sans No1 Bold Regular) and style similar to hillaryclinton.com and...

Postcard Design for Campaign

Postcard Design for Campaign

Ryan Solen for Congress (www.solenforcongress.com) needed a postcard for canvassing designed quickly within 24 hours. Here is the final set, which has two different front options and a variety of styles for the back. I created the back with plenty of blank space for Ryan's team to add in voter information and other text. Lauren, who is an amazing Chief of Staff & Comms, loved the Wisconsin flag on the back design. The front has placeholder text and editable graphics as well. Ryan is a techie and wanted to tweak the text easily for various uses, so I provided color-coded PSDs for his use....

Responsive WordPress Design

Responsive WordPress Design

The Corner Butcher Shop of Beverly, MA project is the result of a complete WordPress redesign. It is a responsive, mobile-first, modular design on a sleek content management system. Melinda wanted a vintage feel to the site, so I incorporated an old-time feel to the design, as well as bringing in the prominent use of the chalk board and "look and feel" to the overall vibe of the site.   The goal was to recreate the vibrant experience in the shop, so upon visiting the site there is a hero panorama of the store.  A quick scroll and you have all the necessary contact info, click-able phone and...

Now That’s Organic Twitter Growth!

I'm currently the Social Media Manager for the Arlington for Hillary Clinton Twitter account.  I manage the design, photos, logo, favorites, retweets (RT), and 95% of the tweets. Using Twitter Analytics, I tracked my early progress in growing the account. The the image gallery below shows the first 28 day engagement analytics. It begins the day I took over the @ARL4Hillary Twitter account in Feb of 2016. I was able to grow this account with tremendous success organically through smart and savvy connections and interactions. Notice the green percentage increase in impressions, visits,...

#NoBillNoBreak Graphic

#NoBillNoBreak Graphic

I created this graphic in Photoshop to thank @RepKClark from the @ARL4Hillary team for her part in starting #NoBillNoBreak. #Enough was the historic House of Rep sit-in/filibuster to force a vote for common sense gun reform. 'No bill, no break!' House Democrats sit in for gun control vote Democrats staged a remarkable and unruly 16-hour sit-in in the House of Representatives on Wednesday to protest at the lack of progress on gun control. This graphic helped commend her hard work and dedication on social media. The House officially adjourned at 3.14am on Thursday without voting on new...

When to redesign your website

When to redesign your website

Redesigning is overrated. It can seem like a quick and easy way to get rid of all of your problems, but it rarely is. Problem first, redesign later Or as Hans Solo put it, “Escape now, hug later.” Redesigning is like hugging. It feels good, but you might die if you don't get your priorities straight. All design should have a clear goal or a problem to solve first. If your website was made 10 years ago, then looking outdated could be a valid problem. If your conversion rate is at its all time lowest, that is a valid problem too. Here are five examples that should lead you to seriously...

Mood & Psychology of Web Design

Mood & Psychology of Web Design

My main interest these days is web design and it's mood: Typography, Color, Content, Space. A great web design is so much more than just delivering content and making it look good. When visitors come to your site, they produce a set of feelings about your website and your organization. The type of feelings they produce – positive or negative – are entirely in your hands and should not be overlooked when designing content. Over the years, there has been a body of knowledge produced to help designers create effective visuals that play into the psychology of their viewers. In order to achieve...

Mobile Web Trends for 2015

Mobile Web Trends for 2015

It's a new year, and that means new trends in mobile web development! Welcome to 2015, folks. Web designers this year should touch on some of the following items (where appropriate) when developing a web site: Scroll for more content. Would you rather click or scroll for more content on a web site? The majority answer is scroll. When browsing a web site on your phone or tablet, how many times have you tried to click the button or open a navigation menu and not have the screen respond? Responsive scrolling is the solution to this. Scrolling creates an interactive and fluid experience for...

A SEO Conversation

This afternoon, I was talking to a client and she mentioned she recently received a random phone call solicitation regarding her web site. The person on the other end tried to convince Sheila that New Life Upholstery wasn't listed in search engines, specifically Google.com, when "upholstery foxboro" terms are used. Soliciting for money and promising a ranking on Google, the woman talked a big game about results. Sheila got off the phone call without signing up for her services. Why? She has been #1 on Google for years. Currently newlifeupholstery.com (a repeat web customer since 2004) is...
